Who’s Ready? Sketchpad Comedy 2017 is!

I’ve been waiting for this feeling to come since the end of November.

I woke up at 6:30 this morning, on a Sunday, to write and plan our first Sketchpad Comedy show of 2017. A big part of me was nervous that I wouldn’t have this feeling at all. In fact, I recently started to think about what life would be like without Sketchpad in it. Many times over the last few months I was ready to kill it completely. Not because I don’t still love sketch comedy or collaboration or doing the work with this great community. But, just because I wasn’t sure where to go, what role we were filling and how we relate to this bigger picture called life.

I’m going to be 35 this year. On the scale of important birthdays it’s not exactly 40 or 30 or 18 or 21 or 65. But, it’s a number divisible by 5 or 10 and generally those hold more weight in our human brains than say 31 or 34 does. 35 represents being on the “other side” of 30. It means 40 is coming. Like winter in Game of Thrones, it basically means the end of everything.

Until, of course, I get to 40 and I realize “oh, there’s plenty of life left. This isn’t so bad.” But, then I start the whole process over as I get closer to 50.

But, I digress.

The point is “Adult Life” is calling and that kind of ruins the fun of doing comedy (or anything really) on the side. It’s accepting the fact that Lorne Michaels has probably given up on me. It’s knowing that I can’t afford to take a job as a minimum wage writer on a cable access show in order to “pay my dues.” Eventually… dare I say… kids, my own kids, will be in the picture. Then, truly life does end.

Except it doesn’t.

And I guess that’s the point. So what if I no longer will be eligible for the NFL Draft. I can still play quarterback on the couch with my fantasy football team (BTW, I was in 6+ leagues this year and didn’t finish above 3rd in any of them).

And likewise, if I want to run a comedy show because… well… because I just want to, then dammit I can!

So, who is ready for Sketchpad Comedy in 2017?

Our first meeting of the year will be Tuesday, February 7th from 8 to 10 PM.

Send me a message on Facebook or email me at Jason@sketchpadcomedy.com if you want to participate in our first show of 2017 (We have a March date booked).

How we do things is changing (for the better) this year, with the first change being (based upon audience feedback) “More high quality shows, less often.” Other changes will be explained in meetings.
